Feb 7, 2009: Sales of fair trade sweets jump 37 percent
Fair trade associations TRANSFAIR and GEPA announced that German consumers spent € 33 mn on fair trade sweets in 2008. This represents a sales growth of 37 percent. Among the various product categories, raw sugar, chocolate (+ 5 percent), cocoa (+ 51 percent), ice cream (+132 percent), honey (+ 36 percent) and biscuits (+ 91 percent) registered remarkable growth rates in consumption. 30 percent of all fair trade sweets were also organic products. One crucial factor for the success of fair trade is the underlying story: creating a better world through consumption by helping farmers in developing countries to get fair pay for their work.
