July 28th, 2009: Nominal food sales up 3.4 percent in 2008
According to latest estimates by Nielsen, German food retailers increased sales by 3.4 percent to € 153.1 billion in nominal terms last year (2.7 percent in real terms). At discount stores, sales were up 7 percent, with the average German household spending almost € 1,300 in this segment. The overall inflation rate amounted to 2.6 percent. In the meantime, both manufacturers and retailers have stated that the first half of 2009 had been very stable. Premium products as well as price-entry ranges were favoured by most consumers, hinting once more at the phenomenon of market polarisation.
