Mar 14th, 2009: Top Food Retailers Germany 2008
An updated ranking of the biggest food retailers in Germany for the year 2008 revealed the following: Edeka registered a total sales growth of 2.6 percent to € 37.6 billion while Metro Group mostly stagnated at € 31.58 billion. Within Metro Group, sales at hypermarket chain Real were down more than 7 percent to approx. € 10.6 billion. Rewe AG grew by a significant rate of 4.8 percent to € 29.6 billion. Schwarz Group saw sales at Lidl climb by 3.2 percent to an estimated € 14.75 billion and at hypermarket Kaufland by an astonishing 9.3 percent to € 11.75 billion. Total group sales were up 5.8 percent to € 26.5 billion. Schwarz' rivals Aldi Nord and Sued registered a combined stagnating sales growth at € 24.5 billion, with Aldi Sued performing better than Aldi Nord (2.3 vs. -0.7 percent to € 13.3 billion and € 11.2 billion, respectively). Among the top 10, the highest sales growth occured at regional hypermarket operator Globus. Sales increased by more than 8.5 percent to € 3.94 billion.
